Debris blocking Railway Lines Trap 900 Visitors en route to the Inca Citadel
Approximately nearly a thousand tourists were left stranded close to the world-famous archaeological site of the mountaintop sanctuary recently, per reports from Peru’s tourism minister.
The incident occurred after the local railway was suspended as a result of civil unrest. Demonstrators had deposited large stones and debris across the rail lines, effectively blocking transportation services.
Protest Background
The unrest began recently after the operating permit lapsed for Consettur that ferries visitors between Aguas Calientes and the entrance of the ancient ruins.
Residents claim that the process lacks openness and impartiality in the process of replacing the transport service. They are calling for opportunities for regional businesses in the area's primary source of income.
Evacuation Efforts
Government representatives stated that more than 1,400 travelers were evacuated the previous day, however an estimated nine hundred were still unable to leave in Aguas Calientes.
In addition to the physical barriers, locals also dug up part of the train tracks, which affected the stability of the line and slowed down rescue operations.
Travelers attempted walking out due to the ongoing protest.
Authorities continue efforts to resolve the situation and ensure the return home of all stranded tourists.
