American flight controllers are more and more looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to keep doing their duties without pay.

But some have been absent, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays caused by weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 American flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary said he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy said in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, can I secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - among the peak after the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in history.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when asked if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," the official stated.

On that day, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The FAA alert was issued at 08:45 in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the FAA said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the country, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The FAA warned passengers in the state to check with airlines about updated departure times.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the World Series, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak times to fly in the US.

Pressure on American aviation contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including pilot training.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his first term as president, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, bringing an end to the government shutdown after 35 days.
