Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
