Teenager Found Dead Following False Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
One 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased just days after being falsely blamed of taking the ashes of a deceased infant during a break-in, an inquest has heard.
Tragic Finding
The young boy's parents discovered his body in his room at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
False Allegations Start
The investigation heard how his mother received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The communication added: "Inform him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a statement presented to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the news, asserting her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Police Inquiry
An investigation report from authorities later concluded the alleged burglary victim had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that said property was not taken in the first place".
Media reports about the alleged taken remains generated online responses, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "online posts were really distressing", she said.
Emotional Health Effect
She added that her son had been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' views genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing heard, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Anxiety
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her child told her he had entered the residence because the resident who resided there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he needed, but refuted removing anything.
Online Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.
The proceedings learned that a 19-year-old urged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is totally devastated".
He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she stated, noting that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".
School Response
The hearing heard from school personnel at the local High School.
On November 8th, she "heard some students talking that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the discussion, the staff member said she called the family's family landline and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The court heard his family said they did not got that message.
Official Conclusion
Lead coroner told the inquest he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with individuals with the condition, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of future deaths report.
Delivering a narrative finding, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Likely falsehoods were afterwards embellished and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.
"During November 11th, he was questioned by the police and following his interview he was freed while investigations proceeded."
The official concluded: "There is no evidence that the actions or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the result of a personal action it is not possible to discern his purpose."
