The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Details Its Implementation of Generative AI for Next Divinity Game

The team behind popular role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently unveiled its new project, sparking a wave of excitement within the gaming community. However, follow-up remarks from the company's lead designer have added clarity to the narrative, focusing on the developer's philosophy toward AI tools.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a latest message, the studio's founder detailed that the developer is employing generative AI for specific supporting purposes. These encompass enhancing presentation materials, producing early-stage concept art, and drafting draft copy.

Notably, Vincke made clear that the shipping content in the game will be authored solely by real artists. "Larian is developing every line manually," he said.

Larian is constantly increasing our roster of storytellers and are currently forming dedicated writer rooms.

As visual development is being specifically referenced — we currently have 23 concept artists and have job openings for further creatives.

Each initiative we do is supplementary and focused on enabling creatives to spend greater focus on the creative process.

Any ML tool implemented properly is a boost to a developer's routine, never a stand-in for their talent.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The revelation of using AI originally generated concern among portions of the fanbase. In reply, Vincke issued further elaboration on online platforms.

"Our team utilizes AI tools to gather inspiration, in the same way we use Google and physical media," he explained. "During the very early ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for composition which we then substitute with authentic illustrations."

He continued, "Larian brings on creatives for their inherent skill, not for their willingness to replicate what a algorithm proposes."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had previously detailed the studio's targeted method to machine learning, grouping its use into three main functions:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: Areas like motion capture cleaning, audio processing, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
  • Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using technology to quickly build basic mock-ups of mechanics to validate concepts prior to expensive implementation.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Researching how AI could eventually create innovative reactivity, particularly in managing player-driven narratives in a complex RPG.

He clearly stated that core creative areas — like writing — are not departments where the studio is cutting artistic involvement. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these very roles.

"Larian is not shipping a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not considering cutting creatives to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
