Thomas Tuchel Criticizes Home Crowd Support Following Emphatic Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel expressed his disappointment that the England team did not receive greater backing from the home fans during their decisive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was happy to see his side showcase their winning momentum, with goals from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Saka inside the first 20 minutes settling the contest. Yet, he was unhappy with the energy at the iconic venue.
“We had limited sessions to get ready against a well-trained team and we did very well,” Tuchel stated. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We missed the fourth and fifth ones. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get any energy back from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you provide in 20 minutes? We prevented them escape. When you only hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s regrettable because the squad deserved greater backing today.”
“I stand by this statement. We cannot do more than leading 3-0 in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a little more backing in periods where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was excessive support for Wales. It might have aided us to regain energy, but it is what it is and that is it.”
Squad Decisions Justified by Display
Apart from potentially starting a fight with supporters, the manager also caused a stir by omitting Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. Yet the move was justified by Rogers delivering another standout performance in the attacking midfield role and getting his maiden goal for his country.
“That’s his style,” Tuchel explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his position.”
Bellamy Hopes for Lessons from Defeat
The Wales manager hopes that Wales, who face a strong Belgian side in a important qualifying match on Monday, learn from their disappointing first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this match,” Bellamy stated. “I need to see our current level. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? This performance fills me with drive.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was substituted at half-time after clattering into a goalpost and is a concern when England face Latvia in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
